26th March 2020
Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, Birkwood Medical Centre has changed our practices and priorities in order to be able to respond to the current outbreak whilst doing our utmost to protect our staff and patients the best as we can.
If you think you have symptoms of coronavirus which presents as a new cough, fever, shortness of breath and you require medical advice, please use NHS111 online https://111.nhs.uk/ If you do not have access to do this, then please call 111.
You do not need to inform the surgery if you are putting yourself or your family into isolation. If medical attention is required whilst in isolation please use NHS111 online or call 111 if you don’t have access. If you have a medical emergency requiring a 999 emergency ambulance, call 999 as normal.
If you live alone, you should self-isolate from the onset of symptoms for 7 days. If you live with others, the whole household should isolate for 14 days.
You can find up to date advice on https://www.gov.uk/…/coronavirus-covid-19-uk-government-res… and https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/
In order to safeguard our staff and patients, we are screening all people who come to the building.
We have identified a room for patients to be taken to should they have symptoms of Covid-19. This room is for patients who have been told to come to the surgery by a clinician. We would ask you wait outside in your car or outside of the surgery and call us on 01472 582700 to be taken to this room.
We are experiencing a high amount of calls on our telephone lines compared to normal and we would ask you to bear with us at this busy time.
We are suspending some routine services in order to respond to our current patients’ needs. If this affects you, you will receive a text or a telephone call.
We can offer video consultations. If this is deemed appropriate, you will receive a text message with instructions to follow.
We will continue to update you as the epidemic develops.
Important Patient Notice
After the Prime Ministers statement regarding the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, the surgery will be dealing with emergencies only until the crisis has abated.
If you feel your problem is an emergency, telephone the surgery and a doctor will call you to assess the issue and decide how best to proceed.
Do not under any circumstances attend surgery without being asked to do so after assessment.
What to do if you have Coronavirus symptoms:
Stay at home for 7 days if you have either:
• a high temperature
• a new continuous cough
This will help to protect others in your community while you are infectious.
Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.
You do not need to contact NHS 111 to tell them you’re staying at home.
Patients who are self-isolating with mild symptoms will not be tested. Patients with suspected coronavirus who self-isolate can request a confirmation email from NHS 111 instead of requesting a sick-note from their GP, as we cannot issue these electronically.
If you require additional repeat medication, please request these via your usual means.
We thank you for your understanding in what may be difficult times ahead.
